Never Trust A White Pickle

That is the conclusion my grandkids have come to.

Last year somehow without knowing it, I picked up "white pickle" seed. (I'm sure it has a name but I have no clue what it is.) It just so happened I hadn't perfected my pickle recipe yet, and all those white pickles got canned with a very "vinegary" (new word) recipe.  It'll make you pucker.

Later in the summer, someone gave me a bunch of green pickles and I canned those with the "best pickle recipe ever".  My grandkids loved them.  They loved them so much that I am now done canning pickles in pints -- it's all quarts from now on.

They loved them so much that all the green pickles are gone.

I tried to pass off the white pickles as the green one's two Sunday's ago.

My kids didn't raise no dummies.

There's probably about 20 pints of white pickles in the pantry.  I'm not eating them!
(I made sure to buy green pickle seed for this year's garden.)

  1. Thanks for the warning. I have never heard of white cucumbers - but I am not surprised - as tomatoes come in black.

  3. I had the same experience when I planted "white" pickles a couple of years back. Everybody thought they looked too "weird" to eat. A couple of people even suggested they looked like something you would find in a jar in a science lab!

  6. Tex....you should have seen the look on the kid's faces with that first bite of white pickle.

Michaele....I haven't tried the black tomatoes yet :-) I never knew there was a white pickle till they grew that way!

Nancy....I knew someone would say where's the recipe :-) ....but I thought it would be Mama Pea LOL! When we get to pickle canning this summer, I'll share :-)

Mama Pea....a science project...too funny! They are very unappetizing to look at. I really don't blame the kids. (it was my fault they tasted bad LOL)

Jill....ya...I'm not joking, there are white pickles! LOL

  7. I just have to ask, was there really a difference in taste between the two pickles? I have never seen or heard of a white cucumber, guess I had better get my seed catalogs out!

  8. Chatty Crone....Well....they probably will get thrown out. I don't know, maybe they would be good in a martini or something LOL.

Dog Trot Farm....No, the white pickles would have tasted the same if I had used the same recipes :-) It's just the color that is different. But now, you will never convince my grandkids of that! LOL. To them, white pickle = yuck :-)

  13. Mary Ann....The way the grandkids are eating the pickles (the green ones :-) I'm going to have to put up 2x as many this year. I don't think I'll ever get ahead like you!

    laughwithusblog....I don't know....these are puckery! LOL

  14. I grew them for a couple of years to sell at the Farmer's Market, people don't like to buy them because they look "different!" Anyway, they are called White Wonder and they are actually an heirloom variety. I combined them with some green cukes last year in bread and butter pickles. Looked kind of cool all mixed up in the jar! :)

  15. Candy C. ....I knew someone would know the name! They are heirlooms...that's probably how they got bought by me! (there were no pictures) Although the name White Wonder seems like it might have tipped me off LOL. I did make some Boston bread and butter pickles (with brown sugar) they looked kind of neat canned. (the kids won't eat bread and butter pickles either :-)

  18. Somehow I'm thinking the white pickles will be an ongoing joke in your family... feed 'em to the chickens. :)

  19. We like pickles chopped up to sprinkle on a bowl of chili. I would think they would blend in well with raw onions? I know the pickle thing sounds weird, but there is nothing like biting into a spoon of hot chili and hitting a cold, crunchy, sour pickle.

  20. Nancy....it will be an on going joke! I bet the chickens wouldn't even eat them :-)

Sonja....I have never heard of that, but you can bet I'm going to try it!! I haven't thrown them out yet!

  21. OR you could even try frying them.... Since they are incredibly sour the batter and fry may even them out a bit :)
