Fish Soup for Chickens

As I write, this is cooking on the stove.  Fish (perch) heads, fish spines, fish eggs, duck eggs, and corn meal.  Looks appetizing -- no?  The chickens will go crazy for it.

When my husband goes fishing, I scrounge the left overs.  This is a small pot, and I will end up feeding the whole thing to my 10 hens and 1 rooster today.  When they eat this, they don't touch their regular feed. Can we say saving on the feed bill?  I will throw them some scratch feed to balance out all this protein.

I have an over abundance of duck eggs this winter.  (Such a warm winter?  I don't know why.)  I can't bake that much.  They may as well become a protein source for the chickens.

I have found that if I add a little corn meal to the pot, the whole house doesn't end up smelling like fish -- I have no idea why, ....it just works.

I swear...there is no fish smell in the house at all right now!!! Something with that corn meal.

Good use of "free" protein! We do that with just about ANY leftover parts from butchering chickens, ducks, deer, etc. it gets cooked, sometimes bones (in the pressure cooker until soft) and if it's too chunky, goes into the blender for a protein filled meal for the chickens!

Huh! I rarely give any fish to my girls as I have heard that it will give their eggs a fishy taste?
Good to know about the corn meal! I'm wonder how to utilize that while broiling or baking fish for dinner? The house always smells of fish after I cook it. Would just cooking up some corn meal mush at the same time(to feed the chickens)work?

TexWisGirl....but really my motive is saving money LOL.

Carolyn Renee....so glad to hear others doing this! We do the same with all the bits and pieces of protein from butchering. Feed is getting way too expensive to not be creative!

Lady Farmer....I've been feeding fish for a long time and never had a fishy tasting egg that I know of. I have no idea if cooking the corn meal mush at the same time as cooking fish would work. I would think a corn meal coating on the fish might work. I can only say try it! :-)

A Quiet Corner....Sorry! :-) I'm really not so much a devoted chicken mama. More like trying to learn sustainable ways to feed my chickens. :-)

Nezzy....It could be eaten by humans...it would be good nutrition with all the fish eggs!
:-)

What a good way to use what most people would just toss in the garbage! I'll bet your chickens are always glad to see you coming with their "treats!"
